Dear Parents and Teachers:

It is with great excitement that I write to you today to introduce the HAT program at Reach Out Ranch. The program, Horsemanship and Tutoring (HAT) combines the excitement, joy and beauty of interacting with horses and the caring guidance of mentoring and tutoring into one program designed to inspire and uplift children ages 8 to 18 who are struggling to make their grades in school. This program focuses on a child's strengths and abilities and provides tutoring in subject areas that are in need of help.

There is much research today which shows that people are unique in their ways of learning. Some people learn best with concepts based on visual-spatial techniques, other learn better using auditory learning. Many professionals including doctors, teachers and counselors are recognizing these differences of learning styles. Students have unique gifts as well as challenges. What this program seeks to do is focus on the student's areas of strength, promote self-confidence and provide a positive learning experience that transfers to success in the classroom.

Why horses? Animals, especially horses, have a special ability to reach out to children and adults in a positive way. This is because horses are nonjudgmental, and they love people unconditionally. Their relationship with people is based on trust and respect. Horses have been shown to have a special ability to inspire kids when other methods have failed. Learning horsemanship can help foster a sense of accomplishment and promote self confidence. Horses can provide a rich environment for learning that will transfer not only to the classroom, but also to the student's life with their family and the community. Horses can teach patience, responsibility, integrity and cooperation. They can provide incentive and inspire when motivation has been lost.

By uniting horsemanship and tutoring we are providing a positive, enriching experience that will translate to success in the classroom, the community, and life! Please call or email me if you have any questions or would like more information on the HAT program.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Penni Wood,
